Choose the database for XenApp data store

The following is useful information for the 1Y0-A20 and 1Y0-A22 exams.

When choosing which database to use for your Citrix XenApp 6.5 deployment, consider the following:

  • MS SQL Server and Oracle dbs are suitable for any size environment.
    • Recommended for all large and enterprise environments
    • Recommended when XenApp delivers applications over a WAN.
  • Do not install XenApp on the SQL Server or Oracle database server.
  • Microsoft SQL Server Express 2008 R2 is suitable for all small and many medium environments located in one physical location.
  • When deploying large farms across a WAN, there is a performance advantage by replicating the data store and distributing the load over multiple database servers.
    • Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle only.
  • Small Citrix XenApp server farms:
    • Consist of 1 – 50 servers.
    • Have less than 150 named users.
    • Have less than 100 applications.
  • Medium Citrix XenApp server farms:
    • Consist of 25 – 100 servers.
    • Have less than 300 named users.
    • Have less than 100 applications.
  • Large Citrix XenApp server farms:
    • Consist of 50 – 100 servers.
    • Have less than 5000 named users.
    • Have less than 500 applications.
  • Enterprise Citrix XenApp server farms:
    • Consist of 100 or more servers.
    • Have more than 3000 named users.
    • Have less than 2000 applications.
  • When chosen, Microsoft SQL Server Express 2008 R2 is installed automatically on the first XenApp server in the farm.
  • Never install a Microsoft SQL Server database or Oracle database on a Domain Controller.
