I thought I would jump off track a bit today and write a post about the URIs that I ping each time I write a blog post. Since there are so many bloggers out there today, I figure this will be helpful to them and to potential future bloggers. Also, others can add to this list in the comments if you know of other URIs that work.
Anyone who’s not familiar with what I’m talking about here, there are dozens, probably more like hundreds, of blog syndicates, feeds, search engines, and whatever else you can think of, out on the web. In order to get your blog posts out to the widest audience, you try to inform as many of these sites as possible about each new post that you publish. Instead of pinging everyone on the web, by informing the majors, your blog will propagate to most of the minors eventually.
The following list contains the URIs that I automatically ping everytime I create a post. They all work as of today. Just add these to your URI list in WordPress, Moveable Type, or whatever blog platform you use. If Ping-O-Matic or one of the other “all-encompassing” ping URIs is already in your list, then you should remove it if you are going to ping each of these separately, otherwise you’ll be pinging each site twice, which could get you black-listed. I don’t use Ping-O-Matic for a couple of reasons that I won’t go into here:
http://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2
http://api.moreover.com/RPC2
http://ping.feeds.yahoo.com/RPC2/
http://ping.feedburner.com
http://ping.weblogalot.com/rpc.php
http://rpc.blogrolling.com/pinger/
http://services.newsgator.com/ngws/xmlrpcping.aspx
http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping
http://rpc.weblogs.com/RPC2
http://topicexchange.com/RPC2
http://www.blogdigger.com/RPC2
Be aware that you have to sign up for some of these sites before you can ping them. Technorati is one that I can think of off-hand.
Next, I manually ping two more, because they don’t work with my pinging software:
http://blogstreet.com/bsibin/blogping.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.your-blog-here.com
(use your own blog URL on the end, after url=. Be sure to use URL encoding. For example, I use: url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.citrixxperience.com%2Fblog)
http://www.icerocket.com/c?p=ping&url=http://www.your-blog-feed-here.com
(use your blog feed, not your blog URL. For example, I use http://www.citrixxperience.com/blog/?feed=rss2)
Lastly, I ping Google sitemaps. You have to create a site map and upload it to Google before you can do this:
http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/ping?sitemap=www.your-blog-here.com/sitemap.php
(use your own sitemap URL. Sitemap.php is just used as an example.)
Hopefully this comes in handy for someone. I use this pinging method every time I write a new post, so it’s second-nature to me, but I’m sure there are still those out there in the blog-o-sphere, especially newbies, that can use this information.
